The show opened with tears. And ended with silence. Kim Kardashian was crying to sister Kourtney Kardashian in Sunday's finale of Kourtney and Kim Take New York, a peek into Kim's 72-day marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries. The finale showed an increasingly unhappy Kim, a frustrated Kris and the rift between the two growing wider by the minute.
"I can't do this anymore with Kris. I got into it way too fast. I got caught up in, like, the fairy tale of this whole thing," Kim says to Kourtney, dabbing at tears. "I'm not happy. I should have dated him longer. I think he thought I was a different person and I've become a different person with him. I feel really bad and I feel like a failure and I don't know what to do."
Cut to Kourtney's beau, Scott Disick, who is chatting with Kris. He asks how it's going with Kim. "New York's been tough. We've been trying to find ourselves within in this thing you call marriage," Kris wistfully tells Scott.
"You sound like a preacher," says Scott. Cut to Kim: "Something feels so wrong and distant inside," she says to the camera, adding that she thinks she should probably talk to Kris.
Cut to their bedroom: He's laying on the bed. She sits next to him and asks, "What is going on with us? Sometimes I feel so dead inside. I feel like we went from so much wedding stress and then came here a couple days later. It's been a lot to deal with that I don't think I was really prepared for."
She adds, "We never hang out."He admits, "I've been so worried about staying in shape because of basketball, which is important, but I've got to make it a priority to spend more time."
"I agree," she says.
"You're a priority to me," he says.
She manages a slight smile. "I just want to be on the same page with you. We should really try to figure everything out. Spend time together. Have fun. And really, like, make an effort, you know?"
"Yeah," he says.
They have less than a week left in New York before they head back to Los Angeles and wrap the show.
Kim fills Kourtney in on her chat with Kris. She listens and then Kourtney tells Kim, who's showing a lot of cleavage in a low-cut black top, not to "ever wear that shirt again. Your boobs look so massive. Like a joke."
Says Kim, "I love it."
"You look like a cartoon," says Kourtney.
"Even better," says Kim, grinning.
They all start packing up to go back to Los Angeles. Scott's lamenting that he is about to open a New York restaurant just at the moment that they're leaving, but no one's taking him seriously.
Cut to the gym: As part of their goal to spend more time together, Kim has decided to go along with Kris. They work out on Pilates machines, but immediately get into an argument. "I'm never working out with you ever again," she says, and leaves.
Cut to a restaurant: Kim and Kris go on a date. "You get appetizers and never get a meal," he says to her. They sit. They have nothing to say. Kris rubs his dinner knife against his hand. Kim says, "That's not annoying at all." He says he wants to lay down and take a nap. They look bored. They start to talk about Kris moving his stuff to her house in L.A. "You should be more excited," he says to her.
The next day, the gang is packing up. "It's been fun getting to know you guys but it's been a tough situation living here," Kris tells Kourtney. He says he had always thought he'd have a dream home in Minnesota. "I feel weird moving into Kim's house, demanding closet space and stuff. ... It's just weird."
Kim tells the camera she's having "panic attacks inside."
She talks to Kris about where to send his stuff -- to L.A. or Minnesota -- and she says she doesn't want his boxes there. "I won't move to L.A. then," he says.
"If I was Kris I would hate you," Kourtney says from the doorway to Kim.
"Why?" says Kim, surprised.
"Cuz you're such a bitch," Kourtney says to Kim in front of Kris.
"It's true, Kim," says Kris, as he leaves the room. "You're not ready for someone in your life."
"I love Kris and I care about him and his feelings," Kim says to the camera. "I don't want him to know I'm freaking out this much, that I'm having panic attacks about all these boxes being shipped to my house."
Kourtney says she's being rude. "That's how I feel," defends Kim. "Every last thing makes me want to throw up inside," she tells Kourtney, who looks disgusted by her.
Kim, who has been wearing a bathrobe all this time, goes off to call Khloe.
"Between you and me," she says, "I'm going crazy. ... I'm not happy. Do I just go in and tell him I can't do this anymore?" She's sobbing. "You don't think I'm embarrassed that I fell in love and really thought I was and look back now it's not what I want, you know? Do I end it right now?"
Khloe tells her to breathe, saying, "Everyone knows how he treats you. ... This just wasn't your fairy tale."
She hangs up as Kourtney walks in and starts ranting and crying. "I'm not happy! You know I'm trying to see if it'll work out here and I know that it's not. ... It happened way too fast. I didn't know him."
Knock, knock. Guess who's at the door.
"Kim!" says Kris.
"What do I say?" she asks Kourtney, quickly pulling herself together. "What do I say? Why am I crying?"
Oh. The. Drama.
"Don't answer the door," says Kourtney.
Kris wanders off. And Scott comes in. Kim explains she's freaking out about Kris sending all his boxes to her home. "You do realize you're married, right?" he says.
Then Kim says, "He's a good heart. He's a Christian. He's everything on paper, exactly what I want in someone, but for some reason, my heart isn't connecting," she says. "I've tried and I've tried and I don't know what to do."
Kim goes on, sobbing, "You think I feel good that I met this guy from Minnesota… I feel awful that I like, made him move out here and change his whole life. I feel sad, I feel bad for the guy, I changed his whole life and he fell in love with me and I fell in love with him and now my feelings have changed. ... At 30 years old, I thought I'd be married with kids. I failed at this and you don't think I feel bad!?"
"Don't leave it up in the air any longer," says Scott. "Deal with it."
Kim finds Kris in the living room and says, "Hey," she says. "I just feel really bad. I know I've been, like, a bitch."
"Don't start panicking," he says to her.
"I'm sorry, OK?" she says.
To the camera she says, "I feel like I live my life so much as an open book. I film everything. I'm so open with the public that there comes a time when you have to handle your issues privately. ... I need to go back home to L.A. and have this conversation without the cameras, without Kourtney and Mason and Scott and without all this drama. We need to figure this out privately. I need to shut off for awhile."
Cut to Kris packing up his stuff and telling his buddy, "Kim's been acting weird. Distant. ... I'm just over her. Ready to get a divorce."Cut to the good news: Scott and Kourtney have gotten their "spark back."
Says Kim in the closing moments, "These past couple months have been such a growth experience for me. I always had this vision of what life would be like. I wanted babies and I wanted this fairy tale. I wanted to be married by 30 and everything I envisioned my life to be is now not the fairy tale I wanted it to be."
Says adds, "We are leaving New York and I never want to come back. ... I know I'll have my love affair with New York again, but I'm anxious to get back home and figure out my life."Cut to Kris as they are driving to the airport: "This is it, babe." The two look out their separate windows, without speaking.
